Greetings! Usually I am not in your inbox on a Wednesday, but a most urgent celebration is on the horizon, and I must have your input!
I have been so blessed by this newsletter so far, and will indefinitely appreciate it in the future. Having the space and ability to develop my own style, process and analyses has been a welcome solace from academic and professional work, as much as I enjoy both of those. In addition to personal benefits, seeing the feedback and growth you all have provided as readers is such a comfort to me! Knowing that meaningful discussions are being had, generated, considered or any kind of lasting impact exists of the words I share is all I could hope for. Thank you thank you.
THE good news: we are growing! As I write this, I am sitting at 72 subscribers. That’s a lot, and again, I am endlessly grateful for people who have shared past issues or referred this newsletter to a friend. In order to commemorate our momentous approach to the 100 mark, I wish to consult you all to see what that celebratory issue will contain. The Sunday following the date we hit 100 subscribers, the issue you chose will be in your hands! Read below for your options:
tropes, teens and white sympathy: deconstructing the cockroach character design
This topic is one that has been burning on my mind for a while. I’ve begun to weave it in more condensed formats, but it order to fully unpack the Dracos, Rafes, and John Murphys of this world, we’re gonna need a bigger boat.
nancy drew, the girls i’ve been, the cruelty: an amalgamation of teen girls in american mystery
Also falling slightly under the tropes-over-time umbrella, we have this beauty. I definitely need to revisit some of my favorite research and summarize my thoughts on new favorites, but seeing as it’s finally cold outside now, it is thus girls-in-mystery season.
what’s in a murder, a mystery, a matriarch: the westing game in retrospect
Last but certainly not least, my favorite novel. I think. I consider it about time this book had its own moment on this newsletter, to memorialize and profess my adoration for the rest of time. I’ll be examining plot, omniscient narrators, ensemble casts, much due Clue influences, Angela Wexler’s forever slay, and cultural impressions that both weather and wilt. It’s gonna be a great time.
Keep in mind that you will receive each of these issues eventually. The one that is chosen for the 100-sub issue will probably just be longer, encompass more references and be generally a portion of my own soul in your hands. I want to go above and beyond! Think on it, and comment your vote by number to stand and be counted. Until this Sunday, I love you!
congratulations leah ! #1 for the win <3
I would desperately like to see #1...congratulations on 72 subscribers!
