Hi all! I’m writing this quickly between shifts as a student orientation guide, which means I’ve been jumping and screaming and singing and kicklining for my life for the last 24 hours, and I just have a few choice words for incoming freshman who may feel they need some guidance in the coming semester! Read on:
Keep yourself busy enough that you feel challenged, but not overwhelmed.
Be your own biggest fan, because you are your own momager, pr rep, assistant, organization guru, editor, etc etc. If you don’t seek things out and seize them for yourself, nobody else will, so do it!
Train and curate your chatty alter ego or friendlysona or whatever it takes to start building connections when you need to! But also don’t be afraid to give space, because everyone won’t be your best friend.
Don’t be afraid to leave your door open, especially in the beginning of the year! Some good vibes and good music floating out into the hallway can do wonders for your social life.
Go to the gym for classes and organized events as opposed to alone, because scheduled regularity and endorphins bring people together.
If all else in this realm fails you, your emotional support water bottle will still be there.
Wear comfortable clothes. Please. I love a good fit as much as the next person but if you’re going to be away from your room for hours, prepare the body as well as the mind.
Also invest in a great bag that can carry laptop + paper + notes + water bottle + pens and pencils + etc.
Craft a great email signature. Mine is my pride and joy.
You’re gonna be okay and you’re going to find a place. If not, you can and will carve it out and make it your own. I love you, and I hope you have a wonderful wonderful semester!
I'm leaving home for my first year of college the day after tomorrow - this post was so well timed and so comforting! Thank you <3
